One life, drawn at random from eight billion

Right now, several babies are born on Earth every second. In this simulation you become one of them and live that single life all the way to its end. Where you are born, and to whom, is never yours to choose — just as it never was.

Shared lives

People leave behind the lives they lived here and what they felt. No names, no contact details. Only the lives remain.

China · Female · age 76

Born to a working-class family in a small southern town, the first in her family to attend university. She spent thirty years as a bridge engineer and worked on seven river crossings. In her later years she took up oil painting and held one small exhibition. She shared 41 years with her partner and raised a daughter. She died in her sleep at 76.

Sweden · Male · age 91

Born in a northern fishing village, he kept a lighthouse for most of his life. He never married, yet every Christmas former visitors returned to the lighthouse to see him. He was still writing in his diary at ninety, in a steady hand. He died peacefully at 91, leaving 62 diaries behind.

"He was not keeping a light. He was keeping every night sailor."

The world you are born into

Live a whole life in today's world, with today's statistics holding to the very end.

How your country is drawn

A country is picked in proportion to its annual births — the more babies born there, the more likely it becomes your starting point.

Length of one life

Reaching the local life expectancy takes about an hour; a year lasts forty to sixty seconds. Pause or speed up anytime.

We guessed from your browser language. Fill it in and the simulation shows this life side by side with your own.

Amounts are shown at the picked place's prices, in its currency. This preference stays in this browser only.

You can leave every setting as it is and be born right away.

Hard events such as death, violence and suicide occur at their real rates. No scene is ever shown, and help resources always come with them.

Ages 15+ · Contains: violence, crime, alcohol and tobacco, love and marriage.

Keep an eye on the time, and do not get too absorbed. Never copy what happens in a simulation.

Every life and its ending are free. The keepsake pass ($3) is paid for separately.

Memorials

Some lives reached their end and were kept here. Anyone may stop by, light a candle and leave a word.

Each life is random, but put many together and they converge on the real statistics. Lifespans run a little longer than in reality, because many people here take care of their health and see a doctor when ill.

Born in the same second

In the very second you are born, other babies arrive all over the world. Four of them live out their lives by the same statistics, shown alongside yours. No one chose where to begin.

Five pauses

At ages 5, 15, 30, 50 and 70, time stops and asks you one question. Think about this life, and about your own. Leave a line if you like; at the end, you may say a few parting words.

Built on real data

For 172 countries: births, life expectancy by sex, infant mortality, GDP per capita (PPP), income inequality, years of schooling, university enrollment, fertility, homicide and smoking rates, and more. Age at death comes from each country’s life tables by sex; causes of death follow WHO and GBD regional patterns.

If deciding feels like too much, start a life and switch on Auto mode, then simply watch. Each year you pick a focus, and you choose at the crossroads of school, work, love, moving abroad or medical care. Choices change a life, yet it is hard to fully escape the statistics of your birthplace. Income follows the country’s distribution (based on the Gini index); amounts appear in both PPP and US terms.

Illness, war, poverty, addiction and domestic violence occur at their real rates, never shown in detail and always with help resources attached; in past worlds you will also meet real history. This simulation is intended for ages 15 and up.
